Transcription options

The two types of transcription we are most frequently asked to provide are Verbatim and Intelligent Verbatim.

Intelligent Verbatim

Intelligent Verbatim transcripts are a full record of the discussion but omit any unnecessary language such as ‘ums’ and ‘ers’, ‘you-know’s, ‘you know what I mean’ etc. Sentences that are restarted are not included unless the transcriptionist considers the meaning will be lost without them. Basic non-verbal activity is included e.g. [pause], [laughs] etc. These transcripts are easy to read and so are suitable for a variety of purposes.

Verbatim transcripts mirror the discussion word-for-word and include every sound audible to the transcriptionist including ‘ums’ and ‘ers’, ‘you-know’, ‘you know what I mean?’, ‘kind-of’, ‘sort-of’ and anything that is said, regardless of how frequently it is said or whether it appears to add anything to the discussion. It also includes a description of the non-verbal activity which takes place such as [hesitates], [pauses], [laughs], [coughs], [gets upset] etc so the person reading the transcript gets a real sense of the interaction and mood of person or people involved. For this reason, this type of transcript is often required for legal cases. Sentences that are restarted or unfinished are recorded along with any opening and closing ‘housekeeping’ comments.

Note: This is the most costly and time-consuming type of transcription available because of the level of detail and number of additional key strokes required.

If you require any other style of transcription such as edited or summarised or you have specific formatting requirements such as time-coding or if you are using NVivo analytical software, please provide us with details of your requirements as part of the Upload audio process.
